Plex Systems Explores Big Data for Small to Medium-Sized Businesses

Manufacturing Supply Chain Expert David Turbide Shares Best Practices to Effectively Unlock Valuable Information

Plex Systems Inc., provider of Plex Online, cloud ERP for manufacturers, today announced a webinar for the manufacturing industry, “What Does Big Data Mean for Small to Medium Manufacturers?” on March 29, 2012, at 1-2 p.m. ET.

Led by manufacturing supply chain expert David Turbide, the webinar will address what Big Data means and what it can do for small to medium-sized manufacturers. Register for “What Does Big Data Mean for Small to Medium Manufacturers?” on Thursday, March 29, 2012, at 1 p.m. ET. Registration is free.

Leveraging Big Data has become more feasible as economic approaches have emerged to cultivate the volume, velocity and variability of data formerly too massive for conventional database systems to process. Turbide will give an overview of Big Data and address its challenges for manufacturers, as well as explore how some companies are utilizing Big Data to give them a competitive edge in shop floor data, financial data, Key Performance Indicators, supply chain metrics and more.

“Manufacturers store more data than any other sector, so the question of how to access and leverage Big Data is undeniably one of this year’s most important business challenges for all companies,” said Plex Systems Vice President Patrick Fetterman. “Cost-effective Cloud-based technology solutions can bring Big Data processing into reach for small and medium-sized manufacturers and help them reveal these powerful and valuable patterns and information to improve operations.”

Plex Systems Announces Compliance with SSAE 16 Industry Audit Standard

Manufacturers Assured of Compliance with all SSAE 16 Type 2 Requirements

Plex Systems Inc., provider of Plex Online, cloud ERP for manufacturers, today announced an independent auditing firm has confirmed its compliance with SSAE 16, an auditing standard that replaces SAS 70. Plex Systems has received a SOC 1 report and the SOC 2 report is in progress.

Presented by the Auditing Standards Board (ASB) of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA), the Standards for Attestation Engagements (SSAE) 16 introduces reporting requirements for service organizations while facilitating convergence of accounting standards between the U.S. based framework and the globally accepted principle (ISAE 3402) for reporting on controls at service organizations.

Companies undergoing an SSAE 16 examination produce a description of their “system” along with providing an Assertion by management. The system includes services provided, along with the supporting processes, policies, procedures, personnel and operational activities that constitute the service organization’s core activities. The “written assertion” by management forms one of the key differences with previous standards which did not require this document.

“The community of Plex Online users can be assured that our compliance with SSAE 16 acknowledges we have met evolving auditing standards for our business processes,” said Plex Systems VP of Infrastructure Tom DeCoe. “Adjusting our processes to adhere to these auditing standards ensures we are in compliance in the US market and addressing the globally accepted ISAE 3402 principles.”

We Are What We Measure

A recent article in Wired magazine (The Feedback Loop) discusses the power of feedback in influencing behavior. The example cited is the speed monitoring signs now installed along many city and neighborhood streets that display a driver’s current speed along with the speed limit. Even though there is no enforcement associated with these signs – the police do not monitor them – they are remarkably effective. In one test, the signs had the effect of reducing average speeds by 14-percent and in some cases reducing the average to below the posted limit.

Essentially, the signs measure for desired behavior. They encourage self-directed behavioral change.

ERP for Performance Measurement

Modern ERP systems for manufacturers can help keep everyone in the company focused on performance. A comprehensive system should track the components of OEE (overall equipment effectiveness) in real time, and also monitor on-time shipping completion percentage, inventory accuracy, quality achievements, production measures, and more.

In addition to providing a context for individual activities, these visible, real-time measurements enable a feedback loop that encourages workers to focus on the tasks, accomplishments and targets that organization has chosen to highlight.

Usually, the simple posting of measurements on a regular basis (along with the desired or expected “target”) is effective in getting improved results without any additional incentives.

Measurements on the Shop Floor

Leading ERP systems offer dashboard features that help track and measure key data, which can include downtime monitoring, production rates, maintenance needs and other real-time reporting. Shop floor workers can see in an instant, via an easy to read color-coded dashboard, key metrics related to productivity, overall equipment effectiveness, and other performance indicators.

As an example, an automotive supplier uses their ERP system to track and record all physical events in real-time (receiving, production, inventory status changes, scrap, subcontract, shipping, etc.). Easy-to-read dashboards monitor key metrics like production levels, on time shipments, scrap levels and more.

Tying Measurements to Business Value

The company is careful to make the measurements reflect real value to the business. As in the case with the speed monitoring sign, this company is aware that its workers will adjust behavior in response to the measurements.

Real-time performance tracking and measurement is critical to any manufacturer. Just note that the desired behavior must be tied to corporate goals and customer value. Each employee must have influence on the measurement.

Setting targets that the employee can influence will result in better outcomes.
