Open Source ERP Provider xTuple Launches Feature Mob for Affordable Multi-Platform Email Integration
NORFOLK, VA – October 5, 2010 – xTuple, the leading provider of commercial open source business management software for growing companies, today announced a Feature Mob initiative aimed at providing xTuple users with affordable multi-platform email integration. Modeled after popular social network activity and online coupon business models, the open source ERP provider is leveraging “micro-sponsorships” to quickly move ahead with adding email functionality into xTuple.
xTuple will make the new email functionality available as part of its ever-growing xTuple Connect add-in product, which works with all three versions of xTuple. xTuple Connect is a powerful integration platform that automates connections between xTuple ERP implementation and other software systems enabling real-time import and export from external systems, including EDI, websites and CAD/PLM.
The email functionality will integrate xTuple ERP with any IMAP mail server, and will include an optional email client within the ERP system; users will also be able to use their existing email client if they prefer. All email, incoming and outgoing, relevant to particular customers or other business activity will be stored in the ERP database, and the full history will be available and searchable within xTuple ERP. This approach preserves the flexibility for which xTuple is known – users have their choice of email clients and servers, and can continue to run on any combination of Windows, Mac, or Linux.
Exclusive to Feature Mob participants, sponsors will receive the updated version of xTuple Connect – normally priced at $1,995 – with the new email capabilities and the first year’s maintenance at no additional cost. The cost to participate in the Feature Mob goes down as more sponsors join the project. Already twelve micro-sponsors have joined, driving the cost from $950 per sponsor to $900. When the count reaches twenty-one, the cost will drop another $50. And all participants who paid an earlier, higher price will be refunded the difference of the final cost-per-participant.
“Better email integration is probably the most requested feature to help our users grow revenues,” said Ned Lilly, President and CEO, xTuple. “Building on our mission of offering advanced functionality for less, we’re making it easy and affordable for users of any edition of xTuple to have a seat at the table as we implement this major new feature.”
The free and open source PostBooks Edition of xTuple has been the #1 most active project on the Sourceforge.net open source portal for over a year, and has been downloaded over 420,000 times. xTuple continues to break new ground as an innovator in commercial open source; the Feature Mob concept supports the creation of additional mutual value between companies like xTuple and their open source communities, over and above the already-successful core development model. For more information or to participate in the sponsorship, please visit http://www.xtuple.org/email-feature-mob.

In recent months, the open source ERP provider has signed twelve new commercial customers across multiple industries including green manufacturing, pharmaceutical, industrial and electronics. New customers include:

- Visible Assets, Inc. – Mississauga, Ontario (wireless asset tagging)
- Windkits – Norwood, New Jersey (windmill materials)
xTuple is also seeing continued acceleration of its global user community, which now stands at over 25,000 active members. The free and open source PostBooks Edition of xTuple ERP is currently the #1 most active project on the SourceForge.net open source portal , downloaded over 400,000 times. In addition, CRM magazine recently named xTuple “One to Watch” in its 2010 CRM Market Awards .
Windmill materials provider Windkits – a joint venture of 3A Composites (formerly known as Alcan Composites) and JSB Plast, Denmark -– needed an integrated and robust solution that could handle complex order-to-cash and purchase-to-pay cycles in an auditable way. The company was accustomed to the advanced ERP functionality in tier one packages like SAP, but didn’t want or need all the cost and overhead of such a system. They also wanted to be able to run the bulk of their new company operations on Apple Mac computers – but at the same time, users at the corporate parent companies would need to access the system via Microsoft Windows computers.
After reviewing more than a dozen options including other open source systems such as Openbravo, Windkits ultimately chose xTuple Manufacturing for its multi-platform capability, rich manufacturing scheduling and planning, and the company’s outstanding customer service. Ramping up quickly to meet the booming demand for wind power, the company is acutely aware that smaller does not mean simpler – like many xTuple customers, they are leveraging the advanced functionality available from open source ERP to do the work of a company several times their size.
“In a small, growing company, every employee and every minute counts – we see xTuple as a member of our team, doing the heavy lifting and giving us guidance on what we need to do each day,” said Eric Schwartz, general manager of Windkits. “And our parent companies are able to access data directly from their PC’s instead of waiting on reports from us, which saves everyone time and money.”

SYSPRO, IFS, and Infor Among Top ERP Vendors?
We recently launched our online ERP database, where web-site visitors can review vendor data and rate ERP vendors on a number of criteria. This database asks visitors to rate their ERP vendor on variables such as functionality, pre-sales support, technical support, and a number of other key factors. While the ERP database is relatively new, initial responses are trickling in and some of the results are interesting.
First, when we originally launched the database, SYSPRO quickly became the top-rated vendor in terms of overall rating, with an average score of 9.4 out of 10. Cove, IFS, xTuple, and Infor were all not far behind with averages scores of 9.4, 9.2, 9.1, and 8.9 out of 10, respectively. While the data has shifted slightly, the initial results have stayed fairly constant.
Top Ten ERP Vendors According to ERP User Reviews
| Software Vendor | Votes | Rating |
| Expandable Software | 1 | 9.2 |
| ProfitKey International | 3 | 9.1 |
| EZ Ware Technologies | 46 | 9.0 |
| IFS North America, Inc. | 6 | 8.3 |
| Oracle Corporation | 43 | 7.6 |
| xTuple | 12 | 7.6 |
| SYSPRO | 40 | 7.4 |
| ERPNext | 6 | 7.3 |
| Include Software | 1 | 7.3 |
| Openbravo | 4 | 7.2 |
Note: This table is set to dynamically update as new results are recorded.
There are a few interesting points about this data. First, the current top ten ERP vendors are all considered Tier II and Tier III solutions; none of the larger Tier I ERP vendors are at the top of the charts (e.g. SAP, Oracle, and Microsoft). An open source ERP provider (xTuple) is even among the top-rated ERP solutions.
Second, Tier II and Tier III ERP vendors were the first ERP providers to obtain the largest number of responses. Could this suggest that customers of these smaller ERP vendors are more engaged and satisfied with their solutions?
Although these are very preliminary results with fairly small sample sizes, it is interesting to see the patterns emerge. This is one of several useful data points that can be used as part of an effective ERP selection and evaluation process. We use a number of other proprietary tools and data points when helping clients choose the right ERP software, but this free online resource provides a good starting point.
What are your thoughts on your current ERP software vendor? Visit our online ERP database and share your ratings for your current software provider.

xTuple Connect Enables Enhanced EDI and Real-time Connectivity with other Enterprise Software
NORFOLK, VA – August 17, 2010 – xTuple, the leading provider of commercial open source business management software for growing companies, today announced the general availability of xTuple Connect . This powerful new tool is a standards-based, completely open platform that enables deep integration with xTuple’s open source ERP system without the typical proprietary middleware or associated vendor lock-in.
Solutions supported by xTuple Connect include Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) – both legacy networks and more modern XML-based systems; any number of web-based e-commerce solutions; and product lifecycle management (PLM) systems such as Arena.
“xTuple is known for bringing powerful, big-company ERP solutions to growing businesses of all sizes,” stated xTuple CEO Ned Lilly. “xTuple Connect builds on that same philosophy, and delivers a robust, standards-based integration platform that gives power users the tools to connect to any third party business software.”
EDI options range from simple emailing of basic documents (invoices, statements, purchase orders, quotes, sales orders, credit memos) to highly complex XML input and output driven by XSLT style sheets automatically processed in the xTuple ERP system. xTuple Connect includes support for xTuple’s powerful MetaSQL scripting language which can be embedded in standard SQL queries, and EDI profile templates for trading partners in the xTuple system.
The major enhancements around automating import/export in multiple formats (CSV, XML, etc.) were driven by several customers in the food and beverage industry, whose interactions with their trading partners such as large grocery chains are increasingly automated. For example, with deliveries to hundreds of supermarkets generating thousands of EDI invoices each week, Cedarlane Natural Foods had requirements for significant additional automation in its order process.
Daniel Baroco, IT Director for Cedarlane noted, “We worked with xTuple to develop a fully automated solution, allowing us to do away with paper-based methods. The xTuple system receives the standard grocery industry purchase order, creates the demand and the order in the xTuple production system, and automatically invoices the customer electronically, while creating a printed backup for Cedarlane’s own files. xTuple has saved our company significant time and money as well as minimized errors that comes with manual data entry.”
In addition to the multiple integration solutions and automated data transport over email and FTP, xTuple Connect also enables traditional batch processing functionality, such as the scheduling of long-running reports and database maintenance tasks, and setting up and running repeating jobs.
xTuple Connect is included in the xTuple Manufacturing Edition and is available separately as a loadable Package for the PostBooks and Standard Editions on the xChange online app store. Pricing is $1,995. For more information please visit www.xtuple.com/connect .
Training for xTuple Connect is available as part of the Power User class meeting at xTuple’s Norfolk, Virginia offices next week, from August 24-27. For more information on the class, please visit www.xtuple.com/training202.

xTuple Makes Business Management Software Easier for SMBs and Expands Cloud Service
NORFOLK, VA – June 30, 2010 – xTuple, the leading provider of commercial open source business management software for growing companies, today announced the release of the latest version of xTuple’s flagship product and the expansion of the xTuple Cloud Service. New features of the open source ERP software include a QuickStart Wizard for easy system set up and an xTuple Desktop interface with sample graphical workflows for sales, CRM, accounting, purchasing, and manufacturing.
“Today’s release makes our solution significantly more accessible to small to midsized businesses without major internal IT resources. The software is easier to use, less intimidating and more accessible for the average user,” stated xTuple CEO Ned Lilly. “Life beyond QuickBooks doesn’t have to be hard.”
Significant new features and enhancements include:
- xTuple Desktop: a loadable package, completely customizable, which allows users to create their own favorite places in the application, and even customized workflows for defined business processes and summary dashboards of key business metrics.
- The QuickStart Wizard: an add-in package that complements the xTuple Desktop with an easy-to-follow guide for setting up a company from scratch. It is available for purchase on the xTuple xChange for $30 for users with locally installed databases. It is also included with the xTuple Cloud Service at no additional charge.
xTuple PostBooks is the free open source offering, which is suitable for small businesses. xTuple Standard is a midrange commercial offering, which adds advanced inventory control, warehousing, and other features to the core package. xTuple Manufacturing is the most advanced commercial offering, which is ideal for manufacturing companies in both discrete and batch process production; make to order, make to stock, or mixed-mode; even job shops and engineer-to-order.
xTuple Cloud Service enables users across all three editions of the software to run their database in the cloud via Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2). Following a very successful free public testing period, xTuple has incorporated feedback gathered over the past two months, defined the full commercial service and built the QuickStart Wizard to help new customers get started in the cloud. For information on pricing, visit www.xtuple.com/cloud-pricing.
Existing xTuple users can also elect to move their onsite database to the cloud. Sanford, NC-based Red Wolf LLC, a provider of contract assembly, machining, and fabrication Services, will be migrating its current five-user xTuple Manufacturing database to the xTuple Cloud Service. “As a small business with limited IT resources, we’re happy to have our xTuple business software run in a reliable cloud environment,” said Red Wolf President Kim Sutton. “We have seen significant improvements in our business since initially implementing xTuple, and look forward to continued success with this new service.”
Recently, xTuple also announced the release of the xTuple Web Portal and the Time and Expense add-in package. The Web Portal enables xTuple users to utilize their website to work directly with customers, suppliers, or other business partners. The xTuple Web Portal, which was previewed at DrupalCon in April, can be hosted on-premise or through an xTuple Partner. It enables companies to:
- Improve customer service
- Establish an internal helpdesk
- Build deeper relationships with partners or suppliers
- Engage end-users of the company’s products
Once a conversation is initiated in the xTuple Web Portal, an Incident is automatically created in the xTuple CRM module where users can categorize, prioritize and assign the Incident to a staff member or team. In addition, users can create Opportunities, ToDo’s or even full Projects from that initial Incident.
As the Incident is worked on internally, the company’s website is updated with status reports and notes to ensure all parties are kept in the loop. In addition, the person who filed the Incident can receive status updates via email.
“We use the Web Portal internally at xTuple for customer and partner support and it has greatly streamlined our communication efforts. We are committed to providing the tools necessary for companies to gain control over their operations and power their growth,” said Ned Lilly, xTuple CEO.
This powerful new tool runs on all three editions of the xTuple software: xTuple PostBooks is the open source offering, which is free and suitable for small businesses. xTuple Continues to Build Momentum by Meeting Market Demand for Open Source ERP
NORFOLK, VA – April 26, 2010 – xTuple, the leader in open source enterprise resource planning (ERP) software for small to medium-sized businesses (SMBs), today announced it has closed another very successful quarter with revenue up over 20 percent from first quarter 2009.
This year-over-year growth was in part due to the expansion of its international partner network, which translated into multiple new companies outside of the US deploying xTuple’s world class ERP solution. New international partners included Groupe Concerti (Canada), Gennai3 Corp. (Japan), Di Fiore Solucoes (Brazil), Alpen Consulting (Singapore) and Soluciones Empresariales Open (Mexico).

Domestically, a number of new commercial customers came onboard, including EA Patten , a manufacturer of precision machined parts and custom formed tubing, providing solutions to the Aircraft and Aerospace industry since the 1940′s. For years, the Connecticut-based company ran on the IBM iSeries Application System/400 (AS/400) midrange system. But faced with declining support for legacy applications and an uncertain future for the platform, EA Patten decided it needed a more modern ERP package that could grow with the company.
“We see commercial open source solutions as logical replacements for legacy platforms like the AS/400,” said Ralph Walsh, president of R. Walsh Associates, which has delivered trusted IT solutions to EA Patten for years. “Today, an xTuple ERP system running on a Linux server can provide greater functionality while costing a fraction of maintaining the old system.”
“The value proposition is unbeatable,” agreed EA Patten President Dave Pinette. “And since xTuple’s ERP solution is developed and deployed using their commercial open source model, we’ve got a measure of control over our technology investment that we never had before.”
On the community front, xTuple added 4,000 community members (bringing its global user community to more than 25,000 active members). Downloads of the free, open source PostBooks Edition of xTuple ERP surpassed 360,000 and the project remains the #1 most active project on the SourceForge.net open source portal .
“Companies of all sizes are intensely interested in open source ERP, whether they are moving off a complex legacy solution or upgrading from something as simple as QuickBooks and spreadsheets,” said xTuple CEO Ned Lilly. “xTuple is a great example of how a private company can profitably leverage the open source business model and grow its commercial business in strong partnership with its community.”
The PostBooks Edition of xTuple ERP is available under the open source Common Public Attribution License (CPAL), or xTuple’s hybrid commercial license, whereby customers and partners have full access to the application source code, and any enhancements made to the product flow back to xTuple for review, quality testing, and possible incorporation into the baseline product. The Standard and Manufacturing Editions of xTuple are commercially-licensed products with expanded features based on the core PostBooks Edition. All three versions of xTuple run equally well on Mac, Windows and Linux computers and are fully internationalized with multi-currency, support for multiple tax structures, and multilingual translation packs maintained by the global xTuple open source community .

xTuple ERP 3.5 Adds Cloud Computing, Drop Ship, and Time Entry
NORFOLK, VA – March 24, 2010 – xTuple, the leader in Mac and open source enterprise resource planning (ERP) software for small to medium-sized businesses (SMBs), today announced the general availability of version 3.5 of its namesake product. This latest version saves employee time and cuts costs by automating many routine tasks that are often performed manually or by expensive external systems. Version 3.5 also continues xTuple’s recent push to add more enterprise-class functionality to the core package, while retaining the ease-of-use for which the company is known.
“The reality is many SMBs today are limited largely to moving ahead tactically, rather than strategically,” said Jay Lyman, enterprise software analyst for The 451 Group. “This can be particularly true with desktop financial applications, but by leveraging higher-end ERP and CRM features that are still affordable thanks in large part to open source, they can consolidate steps and operate more strategically and effectively.”
This latest version of xTuple also gives users of the free PostBooks Edition the ability to run their xTuple database in the cloud via Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2). During the month of April, the company will be providing the xTuple cloud service at no charge and encouraging feedback to help define what will eventually be a commercial service, billed monthly possibly across all three Editions of the software.
Tweet this : Open source accounting, CRM & ERP provider #xTuple releases 3.5 for SMBs with cloud, drop ship, and time entry http://tinyurl.com/ycc2b9c.
Significant new 3.5 features and enhancements include:
Drop ship purchasing: Now taking a sales order, immediately purchasing the item and having it shipped directly to the customer is fully automated and seamless for distribution companies.
Expanded support for tooling: Facilitates managing and consuming tools in the manufacturing process
Pricing effectivity: Dramatically increases the flexibility of the pricing engine with regard to effectivity dates.
Time and expense management: xTuple 3.5 supports individual time and expense entry, optionally tied to Project Tasks.
Powerful new user-configurable filters in the CRM module: Allows non-programmers to customize the most-often used displays.
Support for PostgreSQL 8.4 and Qt 4.6.
Embedded MetaSQL editor: Enables power users to take deeper dives into custom reporting and use conditional data throughout the application.
Andrew Bergin, CIO at Minnesota-based Bergin Fruit and Nut Company (sponsor of the pricing effectivity enhancements in version 3.5) noted, “xTuple provides big-company ERP functionality, but makes it easy for smaller, growing companies to see real business benefit quickly. We implemented xTuple in a matter of months, and are having our best year in decades.”
Since xTuple’s last release in late 2009, over 400 enhancements have been added by the company, its partners, and other community members. To date, the xTuple community has over 25,000 members and the PostBooks Edition has been downloaded more than 340,000 times. Additionally, it is consistently ranked among the most active projects on the SourceForge.net open source portal .
xTuple CEO and co-founder Ned Lilly stated, “xTuple 3.5 gives distributors, manufacturers and service-oriented businesses improved visibility into company data, increased control over their operations and the ability to make informed business decisions. The continuous involvement of our community of customers, partners, and open source users is the key to the ongoing improvement of the product. Its how we’re able to add more and more sophisticated enterprise functionality, while keeping the simplicity that SMBs require.”
The PostBooks Edition of xTuple ERP is available free of charge under the open source Common Public Attribution License (CPAL), or xTuple’s hybrid commercial license, whereby customers and partners have full access to the application source code, and any enhancements made to the product flow back to xTuple for review, quality testing, and possible incorporation into the baseline product.
